have a method, by means of serial X-ray examinations at different stages of the disease, of watching the pathological processes at work during life, and of correlating the findings with clinical symptoms and the degree of disability. In a case suspected, on clinical grounds, of silicosis, the two deciding points are (1) a history of exposure to silica dust, and (2) X-ray findings. Either alone is not enough. If the disease is complicated by infection, such as tubercle (as it often is) the matter becomes more difficult; but in uncomplicated silicosis in the second or third stages, as I shall point out, the X-ray appearances are fairly characteristic. Before we consider what actually occurs in the lung a brief survey of the lymphatic system of the lungs and pleura is at first necessary, since it is this system which is primarily affected in this disease. So far as we know anything about them, the following

Bilateral Spontaneous Pneumothorax in Chronic Silicosis: A Case Report

Silicosis is an occupational lung disease caused by inhalation of crystalline silica. People working in occupations like sandblasting, surface drilling, tunneling, silica flour milling, ceramic making, and so forth are predisposed to develop silicosis. Crystalline forms of silica are more fibrogenic than the amorphous forms, highlighting the importance of the physical form in pathogenesis. Lung...

Lupus-like autoimmune disease associated with silicosis.

Major occupational exposures to silica occur in the mining, stone-cutting, and abrasives industries [1,2]. Estimates of the total number of exposed workers in the US today range from 1.2 to 3 million people [2]. Although prolonged exposure to silica has long been associated with pulmonary pathology, a growing body of evidence suggests that the lung is not the only organ affected by silicosis. S...

Immunomodulation and oxidative stress in denim sandblasting workers: changes caused by silica exposure.

Workers in denim sandblasting are at a high risk of developing silicosis, an occupational lung disease caused by inhaling crystalline silica dust. The development and progress of silicosis is associated with the activation of the immune system and oxidative stress. In the former, interferon-gamma induces both neopterin release and the enzyme indoleamine [2, 3]-dioxygenase (IDO) in various cells...
